Three things worth calling about

You do not need to get on a ladder to know your gutters need attention. These are the three things our owner tells people to watch for, in the order they usually show up.

"It runs over the top when it rains hard."

The gutter is full, not undersized

Water going over the front edge, or backing up behind the gutter toward the fascia, almost always means the trough is packed. Rain has nowhere to go, so it takes the shortest route down, which is your siding and your foundation.

"Nothing comes out of the downspout."

The blockage moved downstream

If the gutter is holding water but the downspout stays dry in a storm, the clog has packed into the elbow. That weight sits on the hangers until something pulls loose. Worth a call before it does.

"We have a lot of trees."

Then it needs doing every year

Homes with trees close to the house should have the gutters cleaned annually, whether or not anything looks wrong yet. It is the cheapest maintenance on a house, and skipping it is how the other two signs start.

The roof inspection starts at ground level with the gutters, downspouts, fascia and trim, because half of what a roof is doing shows up at the edge. Anything we find there lands in the same photo report, marked Good, Watch or Fix Now like everything else.

Cleaned, repaired, replaced or guarded

Four different jobs, and which one you need is usually obvious once someone has actually looked.

Cleaning and checking

The annual job for houses with trees. We clear the troughs and the downspouts, flush them, and tell you what shape the hangers, seams and fascia are in while we are up there. If a clean is all it needed, that is what the visit costs you.

Repairs

Sagging runs, pulled hangers, split seams, downspouts that came off the wall, and the fascia damage that standing water leaves behind. Most of this is a short visit rather than a replacement, and we will say so when it is.

Replacement

When the run is too far gone to patch, or when the roof above it is being replaced anyway. Doing both in the same visit is cheaper and neater than doing them a year apart, which is why we ask about the gutters during a roof quote.

Leaf guards

The way to stop doing this every autumn. Guards keep the leaf load out of the trough so the annual clean stops being necessary. Worth it on a house with trees, unnecessary on a house without them, and we will tell you which one you have.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

Once a year if you have a lot of trees around the house, and that is the main thing that decides it. Houses with nothing overhanging can often go longer. If you are not sure which you are, that is worth a phone call rather than a guess.

My gutters overflow in heavy rain. What does that mean?

Water running over the top, or backing up behind the gutter, nearly always means the trough is blocked rather than too small. It is worth having checked, because the water is going down your siding and toward your foundation instead of away from the house.

No water comes out of my downspout. Is that a problem?

Yes. If the gutter is holding water and the downspout stays dry during a storm, the clog has packed into the elbow where it turns. The trapped weight pulls on the hangers, so it is better dealt with before something comes away from the house.

Do gutter leaf guards actually work?

On a house with trees, yes: they keep the leaf load out of the trough and largely remove the need for the annual clean. On a house with nothing overhanging, they solve a problem you do not have. We will tell you honestly which situation yours is.

Can you do the gutters at the same time as the roof?

Yes, and it is usually the sensible order. The same crew is already there, the edge is already open, and doing both at once costs less than bringing everyone back a year later.
